Africa’s small-business financing story is usually framed around what is missing: the billions of dollars that entrepreneurs cannot access, the businesses that remain outside formal finance, and the gap between demand for capital and the ability of financial institutions to provide it. But there is another way to look at the opportunity. Instead of starting with the financing gap, start with what is already moving.

Walk through almost any African town and the most important business story may not be the one making headlines. These investments undoubtedly matter, but they can also overshadow another powerful force quietly transforming communities across the continent: the small business owner with a viable idea and just enough capital to bring it to life.

Large-scale development finance does not materialize overnight. It is usually the product of extended diplomatic engagement, fiscal restructuring, and careful alignment between public institutions and private capital markets. Kenya’s recent USD 1 billion agreement with the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), alongside the announcement that DFC will establish a permanent office in Nairobi from January 2026, reflects precisely this kind of long-term institutional commitment. Rather than a short-term intervention, the move signals a recalibration of how Kenya fits into U.S. development finance strategy across Africa.
